Does a Mortal Shell II weapon tier list make sense?

Partially — but not the way it does in other Souls-likes. Because Mortal Shell II has no weapon scaling, there is no damage-per-hit table to rank. A tier list here is really a ranking of movesets, infusion compatibility and how well a weapon converts hits into break damage, which is far more subjective.

Add the fact that Balance Patch 1 is confirmed to include weapon buffs, and any static S/A/B table published today has a short shelf life.

What the community list actually contains

The most detailed community ranking we found comes from a single player at NG++ and covers:

  • Weapons: Axatana, Axe and Dagger, Black Needle, Great Martyr's Blade, Clockwork Scythe, Iconoclast
  • Infusions: Bloodcurse, Frost, Stasis, Phantom, Lightning, Poison
  • Shells: Tiel, Lazlo, Proxima, Smert, Eredrim, Genessa, Gragu, Sariel

That is a useful seed, not a verdict. The source itself is one player's experience at very high progression, where every bond tier is unlocked and every weapon is fully enhanced — conditions that do not exist in a first playthrough.

The real tier criteria

If you want to rank weapons yourself, these are the axes that actually matter in Mortal Shell II:

Infusion access. This is the biggest hidden differentiator. Every weapon can use generic passives such as the Auspicious Stone (increased melee crit chance), but not every weapon can use every infusion. Fast-hitting weapons want Blood Curse, which deals massive damage once enough stacks are inflicted. The Axe and Dagger can be infused with Blood Curse; the Axatanas cannot. A "top tier" weapon for a bleed build can be a poor pick for a lightning build.

Signature Tarstones. Some stones are weapon-exclusive. The Colossus stone only works with the hammer, and the Scholar's Whetstone only works with the scythe. If a stone defines a playstyle, only one weapon can run it.

Interrupt potential. With no stamina bar, fights are about pressure. Fast weapons stun-lock enemies that heavier weapons cannot, which is why one player describes the Axe and Dagger as outright better at controlling certain enemies than the Iconoclast.

Break damage and riposte windows. Building posture damage on enemies opens them to a riposte that deals massive damage and grants i-frames. Weapons that apply break damage efficiently are effectively safer, not just faster.

Reading a tier list without wrecking your run

Do not upgrade a weapon to a high tier before you have used it. Weapon enhancements get expensive in later tiers, and while a respec exists later in the game, you should treat it as a safety net rather than a plan.

The safe sequence:

  1. Find a weapon, equip it, and fight with it for ten minutes.
  2. Check which infusions it can accept before committing to an elemental build.
  3. Upgrade only what you are actively using — gold is the bottleneck early.
  4. Keep the Iconoclast levelled as a fallback; it is viable to the endgame.

Where the meta will move

Balance Patch 1 targets economy, bosses and enemies, weapons and Tarstones. Weapon buffs are confirmed as a category, but the patch number, size, and the exact per-weapon changes are 未確認 until an official changelog is mirrored.

That matters for tier lists specifically: a weapon that is mid-tier because its infusion is weak can jump tiers overnight if that infusion is buffed.

Our position

We are not publishing an S/A/B table, because every ranking we could produce would be either copied opinion or invented data. What we can state with confidence:

  • The Iconoclast is a legitimate endgame weapon.
  • The Axe and Dagger is the most consistently recommended early upgrade and is infusion-flexible.
  • Axatanas are fast but cannot take Blood Curse.
  • Great Martyr's Blade is the heavy option most often paired with tank Shells.
  • Infusion compatibility outranks raw moveset when you are choosing a weapon for a specific build.

Everything else — damage values, exact rankings, and the standing of Black Needle and Clockwork Scythe — is 未確認.
