Where do you find Shells in Mortal Shell II?
You do not start with a Shell and you do not pick one from a menu. Shells lie on the ground out in the world, and you buy them with Glimpses. Once you complete the prologue and reach the main beacon area, all the Shells you have unlocked are laid out there and you simply walk up and take one.
Mortal Shell II has 8 permanent Shells, a figure confirmed by the publisher. The roster is:
Tiel · Proxima · Eredrim · Gragu · Smert · Genessa · Lazlo · Sariel
Harros is not one of the 8
Harros is the Shell used during the prologue and is not part of the permanent roster. Counting it would give you nine, which is wrong. Keep the prologue Shell separate from the 8 you can actually build around.
What is confirmed vs what is not: the eight names are confirmed against the Steam achievement list (achievement data is read from the game itself). Their locations are not — see the table below, where seven of the eight remain Sin confirmar.
We are explicit about this because several third-party wikis publish full Shell location routes right now. Some of those pages state internally that they are "not yet tested in-game". A wiki page existing is not evidence that its content is correct.
Below is everything about their locations that our sources confirm, plus an explicit list of what is still unknown.
Confirmed: the two starting Shells
Tiel (transcribed as "Teal") sits very close to the first real beacon, Widow's Overlook. In one full walkthrough he is found a short run from the beacon, past a small group of enemies and a tree full of bats. Tiel is a stealthy rogue with an enhanced dodge, and is the Shell most player guides recommend grabbing first.
Proxima is the other Shell available immediately after the prologue. Our sources confirm she exists and is reachable at the same point, but do not describe the exact path to her. Her precise location is Sin confirmar.
How the cost works
Shells typically cost three or four Glimpses. The three-Glimpse Shells are the ones you should buy first, and the four-Glimpse Shells generally sit in the second part of the world — reachable early because the world is open, but guarded by enemies far stronger than anything near Widow's Overlook.
Open world, closed difficulty
The game will happily let you walk into the Ruins of Mammon straight after the prologue. Everyone who does regrets it. Early enemies look identical to tutorial enemies but kill in two hits.
Glimpses also pay for bond levels at the Shell Keeper (named Zorrel or Jor-El in transcripts) at Marrow Keep, and those bonds are what unlock tiers of the Shell skill tree. One walkthrough reports five Glimpses to go from Bond Level 1 to Bond Level 2, with higher tiers costing more. Glimpses appear to be finite in a single playthrough, so location order matters less than spending order.
The full list — what we know and what we do not
| Shell | Location | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Tiel | Near Widow's Overlook, short run from the first beacon | Confirmed by walkthrough |
| Proxima | Available immediately after the prologue | Confirmed to exist; exact route Sin confirmar |
| Eredrim | Tank Shell; appears in community Shell discussion | Exact location Sin confirmar |
| Gragu | Named in community tier lists | Exact location Sin confirmar |
| Lazlo | Named in community tier lists | Exact location Sin confirmar |
| Smert | Named in community tier lists; also appears as a boss summon | Exact location Sin confirmar |
| Genessa | Named in the eight-Shell roster | Exact location Sin confirmar |
| Sariel | Named in the eight-Shell roster | Exact location Sin confirmar |
This table is deliberately incomplete. Several wikis fill tables like this with invented coordinates; we would rather publish six honest "Sin confirmar" rows than send you to the wrong cliff.
What finding a Shell actually unlocks
Picking up a Shell gives you four things at once: a body with its own defensive feel, a Shell ability (such as Tiel's Shadowstrike, which staggers enemies briefly and works like a short riposte), a skill tree gated behind bond levels, and access to the rest of the game's difficulty curve — the tutorial strips your Shell away after the first boss, and getting one back is the moment the game starts feeling playable again.
Skill points are shared across Shells and refundable at any time, so you can move points from Tiel to another Shell the moment you swap. That means the only real cost of experimenting is Glimpses, not build commitment.
Route that minimises wasted Glimpses
- Finish the prologue and beat the Tar Golem.
- Reach Widow's Overlook and take Tiel — the cheapest, closest, most forgiving option.
- Return to Marrow Keep and bond Tiel before spending any skill points.
- Work the nearby beacon dungeon and the Mushroom Village for Glimpses and loot.
- Cleanse beacons as you go to unlock Mether's Breath fast travel, then sweep the four-Glimpse Shells once your weapon is upgraded.
Balance Patch 1 changed the Shell economy
This is the most important update to this page. The patch notes confirm:
- The Shell map now uses Gloom instead of Glimpses.
- Spent Glimpses are refunded.
That materially changes the advice above. The "Glimpses are finite, so choose carefully" logic was written against the launch economy; after the patch the binding currency is different and previously spent Glimpses come back. Verify the current behaviour in-game before committing to a route, and see the Patch Notes page for the full list.
Still unconfirmed
The exact coordinates for Proxima, Eredrim, Gragu, Lazlo, Smert, Genessa and Sariel; whether any Shell is locked behind a key or a quest step; and the precise bond costs under the post-patch Gloom economy. All Sin confirmar — and all of it needs launch-build in-game verification rather than a secondhand walkthrough.
