How many bosses are in Mortal Shell II?

Reviews confirm that Mortal Shell II features significantly more boss encounters than the first game, but no official source publishes a count — and we are deliberately not publishing a single number.

The reason is that "boss" is counted differently by different wikis. This game has at least four distinct categories, and merging them produces a number that is wrong for every reader:

CategoryCountNotes
BossSin confirmarFull arena encounters
Mini-bossSin confirmare.g. the mini-boss at Widow's Overlook
GuardianSin confirmarNamed dungeon guardians
Optional bossSin confirmarBosses with no fog gate, entered by accident

We keep the taxonomy separate so that when counts are verified, they can be filled in per category rather than collapsed into one misleading figure.

What is confirmed is the structure: bosses are scattered across the major biomes and inside optional dungeons, many have phase-based mechanics tied to posture and break damage, and Shell-specific abilities can be used to mitigate a boss's raw or elemental damage.

Confirmed boss encounters

BossWhereStatus
Tar GolemPrologueConfirmed — one walkthrough explicitly covers "how to beat the Tar Golem from the prologue and get the achievement"
Unnamed knightEnd of the Shrine of Trials (the Chapel dungeon)Confirmed by walkthrough — the knight that beats you in the prologue, beatable once you have a Shell and Harden
Corrupted Gate bossEnd of the Corrupted Gate, behind a glowing red sheep interactionConfirmed by walkthrough; name Sin confirmar

Beyond these three, the boss roster is not documented by any source we collected. Rather than invent names, we list what the game's structure tells us and leave the rest blank.

Where bosses actually live

Boss encounters in Mortal Shell II come in three shapes:

Prologue and tutorial bosses. The Tar Golem, which also carries an achievement.

Mini-bosses in the open world. Widow's Overlook has one described in detail: he uses a false strike that is easy to mistime, and a grab that Harden cannot stop. Killing him rewards the Arbiter's Prize (an infusion Tarstone), the Revered Gland (more Mether Pulse capacity) and access to the Gloombound Flame, described as the game's hard-mode item.

Corrupted Gates. These are the closest thing to a legacy dungeon: smaller than a full area, packed with regular enemies, an offering chest, a mini-boss, and a boss behind a glowing red sheep interaction. Each boss has a different summon available — Smurt is the summon offered at the Corrupted Gate boss.

Boss fights can begin without warning. Mortal Shell II often places bosses directly in the environment with no fog gate, and once the arena is entered you are locked in — even for technically optional fights. Some dungeons cannot be abandoned once entered either, so losing there can cost you all the Tar you carried in.

How boss fights are built

Several design rules are consistent across the fights we can confirm:

Bosses use far more red attacks than regular enemies. Red attacks are unblockable, so the number of safe punish windows early in a fight is low. Expect to spend the first phase mostly defending and chipping.

Posture and break damage are the win condition. Parries, timed blocks and certain weapons apply break damage. Once enough posture is applied the boss opens up to a riposte that deals massive damage and grants i-frames.

Phases trigger on damage thresholds. The Corrupted Gate boss has at least two observed transitions: one into a phase where she summons adds, and one preceded by a roar. The adds are individually weak but dangerous because they split your attention — the community note is blunt: it is very easy to get distracted by an add and then get hit by the boss.

Defences are weak in some phases. In the first phase of the Corrupted Gate fight, Harden and defensive tools are described as close to useless. Save healing for the phase transition rather than trading.

Practical preparation

  1. Upgrade your weapon before the fight. One player entered the Corrupted Gate boss with a +4 weapon and cleared it in a single attempt; the same fight is punishing at +0.
  2. Keep moving behind charge attacks. Positioning slightly behind the boss made a charge attack noticeably harder to land.
  3. Back off for spin and cannon attacks. Those are the two attacks players report as hardest to read when they start off-screen.
  4. Mark the beacon after the fight. Cleansing a boss beacon gives large rewards — a large amount of Gloom and multiple Ovum.

Community-reported problems

The same community feedback thread that praises the boss design flags two issues worth knowing:

  • Camera behaviour. The camera can begin spinning on its own, and attacks rotate clockwise around a locked-on target instead of hitting it, so normal attacks, ripostes and abilities miss. The only reliable fix players report is exiting to the main menu and reloading the save.
  • Lock-on in immersion mode. The tighter field of view behaves unpredictably; switching to action mode usually fixes it.

Balance Patch 1 changed two bosses

The patch notes confirm targeted changes to two named encounters:

  • Lost Child: damage -10%, health -15%
  • Monolith: damage -19%, health -10%
  • Attack timings retuned on affected bosses

These are recorded as community-verified from the developer patch discussion, not from a mirrored official changelog. If you beat either boss before the patch, expect a materially easier fight now.

Still unconfirmed

Every boss name beyond the Tar Golem, the per-category encounter counts, biome-by-boss locations, and the identity of the final boss. All Sin confirmar. Note that "Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods" circulating in search results comes from the Early Access / beta route and is not confirmed as the retail final boss.
